“You see, Mark,” Bill began, setting his toolbox on the counter top, by the sink, in the kitchen, and looked at Anissa stood next to him, in tight jeans, boots, and a white, woolly jumper, “Anissa's always been fond of touching my things, haven't you?”

Anissa shoved her hands into the warm water in the basin, and scrubbed a plate with a scourer.

“How many times have I told you this is my toolbox, Anissa?” Bill turned to me. “I take it she's forever disobeying you, Mark?”

If only he knew.

“I don't take orders from any man,” she lied. “Certainly not Mark.”

I glared at her. That was not necessary!

Bill stared at her. “Really?” Was that a not so subtle hint at sarcasm? “Because I happen to remember-”

“Please don't do this,” Anissa interrupted, fixing her eyes on her stepfather's. “Have you been drinking?”

Bill snarled, then shoved one of his keys into the lock of the toolbox.

No!

He flicked his wrist, and the lock opened.

Oh fuck!

He drummed his fingers on the box, and stared at Anissa.

Anissa stared defiantly back.

The fucking bondage equipment! The rope! The cuffs! The paddles! Shit! There had been so much stuff inside! I would never be able to look her stepfather in the eye again.

He pushed open the toolbox.

My fingers took to my temples. My heart to my mouth. Anxiety stumped, and nausea stagnated.

“Funny,” Bill began, “the last time I was up here, I could've sworn there were more things in here.” He reached inside.

I tugged in a tame, silent breath.

Anissa set the plate to one side.

Bill pulled out a screwdriver. “I'm sure I had more of these.”

I leaned forward, and let out an astonished gasp. All the items I expected him to find were gone. Only the tools remained.
